Diverging diamond interchanges are unique as traffic entering or exiting a freeway doesn't need to stop, only the traffic on the major street. This could be used at super busy interchanges (mainly the 405) to reduce bottlenecks at those locations. This type of interchange can also be modified to make bikes and pedestrians a priority. All that would need to be done is add a pedestrian/bike signal at the two signals, and a bike lane could be added to the center median at the freeway crossing (see the link to see how the interchange looks, and imagine a bike lane in the center of the bridge in the picture). Doing this should make it far safer to walk/ride near freeways.
