In 1986 the LA Board of Transportation Commissioners created a board order that for all practical purposes shut down the beginnings of a bicycle taxi system in Los Angeles focused in the Westwood area. The City of Los Angeles needs to reconsider it's position on bicycle taxis - we need a badge-based system that ensures bicycle taxis operators are on safe equipment and are not being exploited by the owners of their cabs. From Venice Beach, to Hollywood, to Downtown LA, to Van Nuys Blvd., bicycle taxis can form an ad hoc gap filler where our transit system dare not tread for fear of massive cost over-runs and where motorized taxis are afraid to go due to low fares.
