Stop removing crosswalks, stop making pedestrians push a button to cross the street, stop designating neighborhood streets "secondary highways", stop prioritizing cars over humans at traffic signals, stop painting the yellow traffic lines through the pedestrian's crosswalk, add zebra stripes to more crosswalks, widen more sidewalks, add sidewalk bulb outs to calm traffic, build sharper sidewalk corners at intersections to slow turning cars, lower speed limit to 25mph in the central city, add more street lighting (esp. on the sidewalk so cars can see people at night), add more stop signs in residential neighborhoods, add lighting and landscape the walls under freeway overpasses, etc.

Basically, make the city a nicer place to go for a stroll and more people will choose to walk places instead of always driving.
