Prioritize pedestrians over autos

1. Increase the time allotted for crossing the road. A lot of pedestrians I see are not fast walkers and need extra time to cross the road, especially in urban centers where there are senior homes nearby.

2. Set all pedestrian crosswalk lights to default to "okay to cross" with the change of the traffic light.

In Pasadena most crosswalk lights need to be triggered to get the "okay to cross" light, this is a pain when you are only steps away from the curb when the light changes, having not reached the crosswalk trigger button in time. If we don't hit the trigger, we have to wait a whole traffic cycle to cross- unlike drivers that miss a light, pedestrians are exposed to the weather and cannot make up the time lost waiting for the next chance to cross.

Setting the crosswalk lights to default to 'safe to cross' will help those moments and increase awareness for drivers that they are sharing the road with pedestrians (yes, this will seep in slowly, but it should seep in nonetheless).

3. Start ticketing cars in crosswalks. I have heard stories that pedestrians get tickets for jay walking. Until it is easier for pedestrians to get around LA, the ticketing should be targeting drivers who ignore all pedestrian right-of-way traffic rules. Imagine the revenue from those sources- LA would be flush within the year.
