The safety and comfort of the bikes/peds crosswalks next to the Orange Line BRT are much greater than is typical of other crosswalk locations in the San Fernando Valley. Drivers tend to not encroach on this space and are prohibited from making right turns into this space when the peds/bikes walk or bus signal is activated. Los Angeles should pay close attention to how this was done, and use this as a benchmark level of safety throughout the city. Of the 34 intersections that the Orange Line bus line crosses, Metro has about 12 intersections that they have installed red light violation cameras. This is part of the reason for the level of safety for the bikes/peds. The city of Los Angeles has recently removed all of their red light camera installations. Yet, even at the intersections without these cameras, the level of comfort and safety for peds/cyclists through the crosswalks is far beyond what is typical in the San Fernando Valley. The crosswalk at Balboa Blvd is further away from the Orange Line than most of the other crosswalks along this line and the motorists behavior reverts back to encroaching on the crosswalk, which tends to bully the cyclists and pedestrians by moving very close to them. |
