Two way streets in Downtown: calm traffic and improve safety

While significant improvements need to be made for cyclists, pedestrians and buses, especially in Downtown, it may also be wise to consider changing the one way streets to allow two way vehicle movement. Allowing two way traffic requires drivers to slow down and decreases driver confusion, which makes a safer, more pleasant experience for pedestrians and cyclists. 7th Street in Downtown is much more pleasant than many of the surrounding one way streets, due in large part to the fact that cars must drive slower because traffic is going both directions. These changes can be made in concert with other traffic calming and complete streets improvements to make downtown a more pleasant place to walk, drive and bike. Hopefully, by making downtown streets friendlier for alternative modes, downtown can become a destination- where a vibrant street life can be enjoyed by those living, eating, shopping and exploring in the area.
