Implement Road Diets

Road diets are a proven strategy to make the street safer for all users. LA is full of 4 and 6 lane streets with no center median and high-speed auto traffic. The City should quickly restripe these streets to include a two-way left turn lane and bike lanes. TWLTL greatly reduce rear-end and t-bone collisions while reducing traffic delays caused by cars stopped in the left lane. Bike lanes are a natural fit for the remaining space from removing a through lane in each direction.

LA streets are generally overbuilt, encouraging speeding and unsafe driving. Because the TWLTL configuration is more efficient, road diets generally do not reduce the overall capacity of the street. Road diets instead reuse existing street width to make it safer for everyone: drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians.

Local examples: 7th Street west of downtown, Ocean Park Blvd in Santa Monica
