Here are some of the things that need to be done to improve mobility on Avalon Blvd.

Add better traffic signal syncing along the corridor and add protected/permissive left turn signals crossing Vernon, Slauson, and Gage due to increased car volumes during rush hour and the number of cars using the left turn pockets. Current traffic signal timing along these intersections are not synced, but rather based on programmed time per cycle or how much time a pedestrian has to cross the street.

Another major improvement is to add left turn pockets crossing 41st Street and 42nd Place due to increased number of vehicles turning on street.

At 43rd Street, there should be a new traffic signal added at the location due to cars blocking the intersection during rush hour and a numerous history of accidents at the location.

Timing at MLK needs to be increased by at least 10 more seconds during the morning rush hour because it is heavily clogged by buses coming in rows in the morning, holding up traffic for a certain amount of period.

The 5-legged intersection of Avalon where it meets San Pedro and Jefferson needs to be improved because there is very little traffic signal time, there are too many cars in line to turn from NB Avalon to WB Jefferson during rush hour, and cars coming in from NB San Pedro St are always trying to squeeze in between cars on Avalon to continue north on San Pedro, which becomes the dominant street north of Jefferson. Removing the island that sits on the intersection and adding traffic signals for NB San Pedro drivers would relieve the squeezing traffic problem. As for the long line for cars turning from Avalon to Jefferson, adding a protected/permissive or just the protected traffic signal would allow cars to turn with more freedom. Traffic signal sync time at the location is also currently based by how much time a pedestrian has to cross the street, and it should be based by the volume of cars.
