For reductions in potential conflict points for cycling on busy streets with fast movings traffic, there needs to be separation and barriers to protect the bicyclist. This will will make it safer and encourage more people to cycle. One of the ways to do this is to have a curbed waitng area for cyclists at the intersections to provide separation and a barrier from turning vehicles. This can be implemented even when installing unprotected bike lanes. The space could be obtained in some instances by reducing a sidewalk width at the intersection.
