I'd like a regime of road maintenance that isn't reliant on massive grants and loans from State and Federal government, or the hucksters on Wall Street. We have bankrolled our infrastructure with one-time loans, with no provision made for maintenance. This easy money has made local streets that used to support lots of local businesses and a sociable atmosphere a distant memory. My street corner has several hundred thousand dollars in fixtures, pavement, and utilities - but produces nothing of value for the community nor the local government. Our streets need to help keep the city sustaining itself without reliance on outside money. Better urban design, a focus on local value (not regional auto-based convenience), needs to be a part of what makes a street in LA.
