Where possible, there should be separation with barriers of trucks, buses and automobiles from vulnerable cyclists on streets with fast moving, high volume traffic to reduce the potential conflicts that could produce severe injuries or death. This is done with pedestrians separated from traffic with sidewalks and the no less vulnerable cyclists should have comparable treatment. If Los Angeles is serious about the safety and increasing the volume of cyclists, then this should be the standard policy for this city. Do not follow the cities or countries that have a mediocre result on this; study the Netherlands, which has the greatest modal share for cyclists and the lowest injury rate for all road users in Europe.
